How Students Help Drive Ocean Innovation at SEATAC

Earlier this year, 3 Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) students joined SEATAC as interns, bringing fresh perspectives from the Mechanical Engineering Technology and Business Administration programs.

Their work didn’t just give them a chance to develop their skills, it supported real-world projects with ocean technology companies and community partners. Now back in class, they’re reflecting on what they learned and how it made an impact.

Supporting vessel operations for client testing

William Varner spent most of his internship on the water, assisting SEATAC’s vessel operations team. His role included preparing for client testing and maintaining the boats used for projects requiring on-water product testing and research. These tasks were critical for making sure operations ran smoothly and safely.

“I helped mainly with client testing on the vessel and boat maintenance,” William explains. His hands-on experience gave him a new appreciation for the complexity of marine operations. “The most surprising thing was how much planning goes into setting up before anything can happen,” he says. “There is a lot that needs to happen behind the scenes before testing even starts.”
