Challenge 2

Challenge #2: Innovating Automated Inspection and Analysis of Maritime Infrastructure

Winner: MarineNav (PEI) in partnership with Voyis (ON)

Underwater inspection of ship hulls and marine infrastructure is critical for operational safety, structural integrity, and regulatory compliance. Traditional inspection methods are often manual, costly, and time-consuming – limiting inspection frequency and overall effectiveness.
This challenge sought innovative automated or minimally controlled solutions to efficiently inspect, visualize, analyze, and report on underwater structures with high fidelity and operational reliability.

The Winning Solution

MarineNav, in collaboration with Voyis, developed an autonomous inspection platform that combines remotely operated vehicle (ROV) technology with advanced visual navigation and imaging systems. The solution delivers detailed hull inspections and precise scans of subsea assets, offering a dependable alternative to traditional inspection methods.

The platform integrates Voyis’ VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), powered by EIVA NaviSuite, into MarineNav’s ROV and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) systems. Together, these technologies enable accurate, real-time positioning and high-fidelity 3D data capture – improving inspection accuracy, consistency, and repeatability.

This integrated approach enhances operational reliability, reduces uncertainty, and supports proactive maintenance. The result: minimized downtime and extended service life for naval assets.
