Opinion: Nova Scotia’s defence industry is part of a bigger mission

When we think about national defence, we imagine ships, jets and soldiers, but too often we imagine them somewhere else.

The truth is that Canada’s defence future is being built right here in Nova Scotia. In our shipyards and research labs, at ocean technology hubs and aerospace hangars, Nova Scotians are designing, building and maintaining the tools and technologies that keep Canadians safe.

Atlantic Canada makes up just 6.5 per cent of Canada’s population, yet 20 per cent of Canada’s defence industry employment lives and works here in the region. This is a reminder that every new naval vessel launched from Halifax Shipyard, every sonar breakthrough at COVE in Dartmouth and every aircraft serviced by IMP Aerospace is part of a bigger mission: protecting Canadians and contributing to global security.
