Half of the world’s largest farms are using Innovasea technology
Fish farmers no longer use rudimentary sea pens made of wood and twine nets.
Instead, wire mesh keeps fish in the “open net pen” systems, holding salmon, trout, and other finfish in the ocean until they are at the right size for market.
The next evolution could be closed containment systems, like the Marine Donut that’s currently being tested in Norway by Bluegreen with another donut proposed to be built and tested in Atlantic Canada by next year.
Bluegreen is not the only company with Atlantic Canadian ties seeking to build a better fish bowl.
A Nova Scotia company has been involved in sea pen design for nearly a quarter of a century.
