Toronto, February 4, 2019 - BDO Canada LLP is expanding its annual tech pitch event to five locations across the country.
Now in its fourth year, VC Pitch Day connects Canada’s rising tech entrepreneurs and startups with much-needed capital by providing the opportunity to pitch their companies to a panel of venture capitalists. Companies selected to pitch also receive targeted, actionable feedback from the panelists in a private, closed-door pitch session. Participating firms this year include BDC Capital Ventures, Whitecap Venture Partners and the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation.
By extending its reach, VC Pitch Day aims to locate the best tech talent and ideas – regardless of geography. Last year’s edition added events in Vancouver and Ottawa to a roster of Toronto and Halifax. VC Pitch Day 2019 adds Montreal, bringing the event total to five.
“Canadian innovation doesn’t live in any one city, in any one province,” said Peter Matutat, leader of BDO Canada’s Technology & Life Science practice. “We all recognize the value of large innovation hubs. That being said, past VC Pitch Day events also featured fantastic ideas from cities and towns across the country. As a national firm with strong local roots, we couldn’t be more thrilled.”
VC Pitch Day 2019 will also host networking receptions for local tech communities, in conjunction with the pitch events. These exciting gatherings will once again bring together entrepreneurs and investors for an evening of mixing, mingling and note-sharing on the latest in their local tech scene. All VC Pitch Day applicants will receive an invitation to these exclusive events.
The Canadian tech sector is flourishing, spurred by local investment, home-grown talent and interest from south of the border. Despite this growth, startups often struggle to secure financing. VC Pitch Day fills the gap to help entrepreneurs establish solid, sustainable businesses. Almost 200 companies applied to last year’s event.
“Canada’s tech scene has certainly raised the bar in recent years,” said Matthew Harrison, Partner, National Startups and Emerging Technology Leader. “We’re seeing home-grown tech companies bring bold, disruptive ideas to market in a wide range of industries. I’m excited to see what VC Pitch Day 2019 has in store.”
Individuals or businesses wishing to participate in VC Pitch Day 2019 are invited to submit an application at www.bdovcpitchday.ca. They can select one of five VC Pitch Day events:
The tech industry is a major economic driver in Canada and will continue to grow in importance. Currently, the sector accounts for more than 5% of Canada’s GDP and employs more than 854,000 Canadians. The province of Ontario alone contains one of the highest concentrations of tech firms outside of Silicon Valley. In Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, Canada can point to three large hubs. Investment and long-term strategic planning must remain a priority to ensure Canada’s tech sector continues to grow and diversify.
