SUMMARY:Ocean Connector: The future of international autonomous system innovation
DESCRIPTION:Join us at COVE for a one-of-a-kind event that brings together experts\, innovators\, and thought leaders in the marine technology sector. This in-person gathering will dive deep into the future of regulatory review and how it intersects with the exciting advancements in autonomous system innovation. \nAutonomous systems will be necessary for the ongoing maintenance of offshore industries such as wind farms as they mitigate risk to humans from the somewhat exciting but dangerous environment offshore. Autonomous systems have the potential to improve the availability of information from offshore assets significantly\, but they need to be trusted to do the job safely. This means showing that they are safe and reliable. Otherwise\, there is more downside than upside to their use. \nThe regulatory space is focused on safety\, and the still developing technologies must inform this. If regulation is pre-emptive\, then it may stifle innovation. The sea surface domain is regulated mainly under international agreements focused on the International Maritime Organisation\, with national bodies then drafting their interpretations as needed. \nNick Tudor\, CEO at D-RisQ Ltd.\, leads this presentation on the current status of autonomous systems and a potential way ahead for international certification. \nAbout Nick: Following a full career as a Royal Air Force Officer Engineer\, Nick has been working in software and high integrity systems for the past two decades. As Co-Founder of D-RisQ\, he has worked in multiple sectors including aerospace\, defence\, automotive\, rail\, autonomous systems in air\, land\, sea\, nuclear decommissioning and cyber-security. D-RisQ was also one of the companies that participated in COVE’s Ocean Scale-Up Accelerator Program in partnership with Innovate UK. Furthermore\, Nick is one of only three UK nationals on the invite only panel that develops advice for DO-178C\, the de-facto software standard for aerospace\, and conducts audit and training in DO-178C on behalf of various clients. He also participates in several standards bodies and is the Design Authority Chair for a Scottish autonomous systems project which is setting benchmarks for the design\, development and use of standardized autonomous systems in the offshore sector.

SUMMARY:Ocean of Data Challenge | Défi Océan de données
DESCRIPTION:DeepSense\, ShiftKey Labs\, and COVE welcome the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System (CIOOS)\, Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO)\, and Ocean Startup Project to host the 7th Ocean of Data Challenge: Coast to Coast to Coast to explore how ocean data can improve the sustainability of our oceans and our communities. \nThis free event will kick off on Wednesday\, November 1st at 6pm ADT with an introduction to the Challenge\, presentations from experts\, the chance to ask questions to help idea exploration\, and a chance to network and build teams with other participants. Participants submit their video presentation on Monday\, November 20th and the winners are announced on Monday\, November 27th. \nThis Data Challenge will invite participants to imagine how can ocean data help us understand Canada’s ocean health\, ocean economy\, and ocean people. We are inviting students at post-secondary institutions across Canada to harness CIOOS data for the creation of innovative solutions (including but not limited to user interfaces\, tools\, visualizations\, infographics\, dashboards\, and more) that convey valuable insights tailored to a specific ocean audience. \nThe challenge is broken down into three Challenge Streams: In the Water\, On the Water\, and Around the Water. Individuals and teams will be asked to choose one stream and provide interdisciplinary ideas for exploring how data can be utilized to better inform scientists\, the fishing industry\, or the general public. Each stream can be used to explore different types of data\, for example: “In the Water” can explore how oceanographic conditions impact the future state of the ocean. “On the Water” can use CIOOS data to dive into fisheries management\, and “Around the water” finds how “everyday” recreational ocean are impacted by our changing ocean. You may need to use other open-data sources to complete your application\, however CIOOS data must be included. More details on the streams below. \nThis Challenge allows you to work at your own pace to explore ways to learn about ocean data\, meet others with the same interests and bring together unique skills to create a team (or work solo). This is a fantastic way to show off your design\, programming or other talents. Not to mention more than $2\,000 in prizes! \nWho should participate? \nThe best ideas come from interdisciplinary teams\, so we invite those studying Computer Science\, Engineering\, Biology\, Sustainability\, Business\, or any other programs! As long as participants are students who are registered full or part-time at an University\, College\, or Cegep in Canada. You can go solo\, or work with a team of up to five people. The Challenge kick-off will take place on Wednesday\, November 1 at 6pm ADT/ 5pm EDT/ 2pm PDT and streamed online\, with a recording uploaded the next day. Please ensure you read the Official Rules below. \nFor more information\, check out https://deepsense.ca/ocean-of-data-challenge/. SUMMARY:Ocean Connector: Advancing carbon dioxide removal technologies
DESCRIPTION:Ocean carbon removal approaches aim to enhance or accelerate natural biological or chemical processes that sequester carbon in the ocean. Improving our understanding and facilitating the development of oceans’ carbon removal mechanisms are essential to addressing climate action. Of the various marine CDR technologies proposed to date\, ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) has the largest potential and boasts many advantages\, such as mitigating ocean acidification and having a high degree of permanence. \n\n\nGiven the rapidly growing interest in this area\, a science-based\, research-led\, iterative and adaptive approach in collaboration with innovative technology from industry will provide a better understanding of the potential of OAEs and strike an optimal balance between the urgency of combating climate change\, the importance of protecting our natural resources\, and realizing on this economic opportunity. \nLearn more about OAE and the OCEAN ALK-ALIGN project which involves an international consortium of researchers from Canada\, Germany and Australia to advance knowledge essential for OAE implementation. \n\n\n\n\nMeet the speaker: \nDr. Dariia Atamanchuk is a Research Associate at the Ocean Science and Technology group at Dalhousie University\, Halifax\, Canada. Dariia’s research activities focus on studying ocean biogeochemical cycling of EOVs (and beyond) using observations from autonomous platforms and sensors as primary tools. These include in situ and ship-borne observations of coastal environments (Scotian Shelf\, KoljoFjord\, Bedford Basin Time-Series) and the open ocean (Labrador Sea\, North Atlantic) concerning the carbon cycle (pCO2\, pH\, TA)\, oxygen\, nutrients (nitrate and phosphate)\, chlorophyll\, bio-optical properties of seawater\, velocity and more.

SUMMARY:Ocean Connector: Environmental genomics applications in the marine sector
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first Ocean Connector of 2023 with Dr. Marc Skinner and Dr. Robert Beiko for a discussion on environmental genomics\, advanced sensor technology\, and industrial and regulatory uptake opportunities.\nEnvironmental genomics is a rapidly advancing field that promises to revolutionize the way industry conducts biodiversity monitoring. \nSuch technology provides non-invasive means of collecting biodiversity surveys without physically harming organisms\, particularly species-at-risk\, at a considerably lower sampling effort and cost. Across marine sectors\, consensus exists that the application of environmental genomics has advanced dramatically in a short amount of time\, with demonstrable benefits. \nThat said\, there is an acknowledgement that further development is needed to increase regulatory confidence in applying genomics approaches within the industry. The result of advanced sensor technology for reliable in-situ sampling and analyses is a critical aspect that will further ease the broader application of environmental genomics. \nOn February 2nd\, Dr. Marc Skinner\, senior marine scientist and biostatistician at Stantec\, and Dr. Robert Beiko\, co-founder and Director of Data with Dartmouth Ocean Technologies\, Inc\, discuss the current regulatory landscape\, case studies for advanced genomics sensors\, and industrial and regulatory uptake opportunities.

SUMMARY:Ocean Connector: Talk and Tour at JASCO Applied Sciences
DESCRIPTION:We are taking our Ocean Connector on the road! Join us at JASCO Applied Sciences’ for a talk\, tour and network with the ocean community. \nJASCO Applied Sciences are our hosts for this month’s Ocean Connector! Join us at their 20 Mount Hope Ave. facility for a tour and talk with JASCO’s Project Scientist\, Dr. Katie Kowarski and Engineering and Business Development Manager\, John Moloney. \nJoin in the discussion with Dr. Kowarksi as she shares information on JASCO’s Observer on Oceanic Gliders. JASCO has been incorporating its OceanObserver technology into autonomous mobile platforms\, including ocean gliders\, for the last five years. One recent collaboration with the Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria resulted in collecting five days of data from a glider deployed off the Canary Islands. Post-retrieval data analysis revealed that seven cetacean species’ vocalizations were recorded. Three beaked whale clicks were identified – one from Cuvier’s beaked whales\, one from Blainville’s beaked whales\, and one from an unknown species\, which may represent the identification of an undescribed species in these waters. \nLearn about the SMELTS-JASCO Whale-Raft project\, which combines ropeless fishing with passive acoustic monitoring. JASCO Applied Sciences is a partner with the Sea Mammal Education Learning Technology Society (SMELTS) to demonstrate\, train\, and enable indigenous fishers from Miawpukek First Nation (MFN)/ Netukulimk Fisheries Limited (NFL) in whale-safe (ropeless) fishing and acoustic data collection.
