SUMMARY:Ocean Institute: Deep Dive into Data | Online Course
DESCRIPTION:Now more than ever\, digital skills and data literacy are in high demand\, particularly in the marine technology sector. The Deep Dive into Data program\, created by COVE\, provides engaging tutorials and activities to support junior and secondary level school teachers in understanding the use of data and coding in classrooms. \nDuring this virtual online course offered throughout the month of March\, teachers will become familiar with a curriculum designed to pair marine technology and real-time data collected from the ocean. This course touches on a variety of science and math learning outcomes that will foster critical thinking\, data analyses\, and interpretation that can be taken back to your classrooms. The activities provided will allow your students to dive into ocean data exploration through group activities and coding tasks\, to navigate real-world situations using creative approaches and build valuable skills used in marine sector. \nOnce you complete the online course\, you will be mailed a lab kit (valued at $300) to implement into your teachings and allow students to explore ocean acidification. Optional virtual office hours will be held weekly in March so you can drop in if you need any assistance working through the course or have questions regarding the coding tutorials. \nMore information will be provided by the facilitators upon registration.

SUMMARY:Ocean Connector: Autonomous Systems for Ocean Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Ocean Connector and dive into the world of autonomous systems for monitoring our ocean with Dr. Clark Richards.\n\n\nOceanography is rooted in the need for in situ observations. Remote sensing techniques\, while powerful and transformative in many ways\, are unable to provide accurate data from the interior of the ocean\, which is needed for long-term monitoring\, ocean state estimates\, and understanding the impacts of climate change. \nWhile ships have long been the go-to for collecting data\, recent technological advances have produced an explosion of platforms and systems that can provide data\, often in near real-time\, beneath the surface. \nDr. Clark Richards\, a Research Scientist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada\, Bedford Institute of Oceanography\, will outline some of the systems and tools used by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to monitor the ocean\, such as floats\, gliders\, and observatories and present some scientific results that have been applied locally and globally.
