Business Over Breakfast: Stories from Founders

Join Invest Nova Scotia and COVE on Tuesday, January 31, at COVE’s Colin MacLean Hall to hear from a panel of founders as they share their stories about building businesses in Nova Scotia.
This will be a fantastic opportunity to connect with other founders and members of the ocean tech ecosystem, as well as learn from the panelists’ experiences. After the panel, we’ll have a brief overview of Invest Nova Scotia programs for the cohort of companies visiting COVE from Innovate UK, so we welcome you to stay for that!

Panelists:
Matt Zimola – CEO, ReelData
Mathew received a Bachelors of Engineering majoring in chemical engineering and a Masters degree in computer science, focusing in both machine learning and software development, from Dalhousie University. He has also worked as a field engineer in the energy sector in both the US and Canada, eventually working his way up to leading multimillion-dollar projects.
Maja Maher – CEO, Voltai
Maja Maher is the CEO and co-founder of Voltai. Maja has a Master’s degree in Robotics and Intelligent Systems. Maja is originally from Norway and moved to Nova Scotia from Ontario in 2022 to be part of the Ocean technology ecosystem in the region. She started her first business while still in high school and has 18 years’ experience in tech entrepreneurship. Now She is building Voltai to change the way we harvest energy from motion.
Arnold Furlong – CEO, Dartmouth Ocean Technology
Arnold Furlong has over 39 years experience in business operations, technology development, and sales in the ocean technology sector. He has a B. Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Dalhousie University and a B.Sc. from Mount Allison University. Arnold previously co-owned Brooke Ocean Technology and GeoSpectrum Technologies with successful exists from both. In 2019, Arnold started Dartmouth Ocean Technologies, creators of lab-on-chip sensors to reduce labour and environmental burden of ocean health monitoring.
Kiley Sampson – Ops Manager, Sustainable Marine
Kiley has been a professional engineer in the marine, and oil and gas industries for the past 35+ years. A native of Cape Breton, Kiley has experience in both the technical aspects and financial arrangements of complex projects that enhance resulting in positive return on investment for his clients.

After the panel, we’ll have a short presentation to provide a brief overview of the newly-established organization, Invest Nova Scotia, which is the result of the merger between Innovacorp and Nova Scotia Business Inc (NSBI). From starting up and raising capital, to incubation and acceleration, export development and investment attraction – we invite you to hear everything Invest Nova Scotia has to offer.
